2:10 pm - Quick and stupid question's
|

cerridwyno9

As everyone or mostly everyone on this site does I like to write and I'm working on a story in which the characters sister dies in a plane crash and I was wondering for the wake and the funeral if the casket should be closed. I know most wakes and funerals are open casket but considering the manner of death I don't think it would be appropriate but I just wanted to double check.
Also are the words Mummy and love as in "are you alright love" and Mummy/mommy used ? because I think mammy sounds weird but then again maybe mama would work too.
Granad (hope I spelled that right) for all your help.
Slante.

11:29 am - Visiting Dublin
|

Hi all, First, I apologise if my question is a bit misplaced; I didn't find a better LJ place to ask.
My boyfriend an I are planning our trip to Dublin (May 7the - May 12the). Since we are students, it's really important for us to cut on unnecessary expenses. I need your advice on this matter -
1) What's the cheapest way to move across thee city? 2) Is there some special combined museums/sites ticket we should buy? 3) We prefer couchsurfing, but if we don't find a couch soon, we'll have to order a room. So, are there some low-cost hostels? We aren't picky at all, the cheaper - the better. Everything I found online so far wasn't anywhere near being cheap. 4) Where we should eat or shouldn't (quality vs price). 5) And, of course, I'll be extra grateful for must-see recommendations. :)
Thank you very much!
P.S. Please forgive me my English, I'm not a native speaker.

1:25 pm - Language question
|

dawnage
|
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a language question.
I am looking for a name for a grandmother in Irish - plus pronunciation guide! I am aware of the word seanmháthair, meaning grandmother, but don't know how to say it, so would appreciate advice! Also, I am interested in diminutives of the word - in the way that English has granny, grandma, gran, nanny, nan, nana &c. Little children need something quite easy to say!
If anyone has any comments on the popularity / formality / social and class associations of any of the expressions, that would also be welcomed.
Many thanks in advance!

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is someone who could explain this to me. On Google Maps, I can see town names that say things like "Pollakeel (Loughtee Upper By)"
(it's near +53° 57' 15", -07° 17' 50" if you're curious)
What does the "upper by" part mean?
Thanks!

Thorn speaks with author and philosopher Brendan Meyers It makes so much sense to me that I have found T. Thorn Coyle to be interviewing this author. I believe I was very self aware gay man that sent an inquiry to him at the time it was being released.

I'm an undergraduate student of Linguistics at McGill University and I am conducting a study on the properties of Belfast English. I am looking for people from Belfast to participate in my study by filling out a short online survey. The survey includes demographic information (kept completely anonymous) and questions about rhymes, words, etc. It should take only about 10 minutes. Thank you in advance! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

3:06 pm - Myles na gCopaleen short story
|

marauded
|
This is a Myles na gCopaleen or Flann O'Brien story I remember reading in secondary school, but I can't recall the name of it, or find the excerpt online...
All I can find is this article that references it. Otherwise I have no such luck and I was certain that it was a short story.
“When I returned to London, I went up to the bedroom with some curiosity. There was nothing to be seen save the bath of acid. I carried the bath down to sitting room and got a glass. I filled the glass with what was in the bath, crept in under the table and swallowed the burning liquid. Glass after glass I swallowed till all was gone. It was with grim joy that I accomplished my threat that I would drink this plumber under the table. It was the sort of thing one did at the turn of the century.”
Help much appreciated, I'd like to read it again. Thanks!
EDIT: I think it could be in 'An Béal Bocht'

I live in America but I'm contemplating moving to Ireland at some point in the future. I was wondering if any nationals could give me some advice about cities to consider living in/checking out before I make the jump.

Can someone tell me where the birthplace of Percy French plaque is?
According to Wikipedia, it's Elphin, County Roscommon, but if someone can tell me what road it's on, that would be great. If you can find GPS coordinates that would be ideal.
I went there with my mom & dad, and we had a job to find it, but I'd like to go back and see it again.
I might have found where it is here:
http://www.visitroscommon.com/tour2.asp
From Tulsk we head north for Elphin along the N61. About 3km along this road on the left look for signs for the birthplace of Percy French at Clooneyquin. Willam Percy French, songwriter, poet, entertainer and painter was born on the 1st May 1854 at his family ancestral home at Cloonyquin.
so by following that on Google Maps, I think it might be at 53° 48' 2.142" -8° 14' 35.0406" can anyone confirm?
Thanks!

9:50 pm - Irish history resources
|

ibid
|
Hi
Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I've got a summer job teaching English at a language school in Cambridge starting later in the month. In the afternoons I am to teach 'History of the British Isles' to innocent unsuspecting foreigners, the materials they have given me are not good to put it mildly so I need to swot up on my Non-English history and prepare my own things. I'd like to do some work on Irish history as well, considering for better or worse British and Irish history have been so entwined, and I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of online schools' resources for Irish history or if there are any tv shows I could use for research. My google Fu is lacking I'm afraid.
Thanks all :)

Though I'm not Irish myself, I love everything Irish, including the wonderful Irish accent. I am an undergraduate linguistics student at McGill University, and I'm looking for participants for a study on Irish English (Hiberno-English). You can see the survey here. It only takes a few minutes to fill out and you can have fun laughing at my bad poetry! The only requirement is that you grew up in (or are growing up) in Ireland. Thanks for your help!

I've had a bit of bad luck with Live Journal entries so far. I seem to offend people without meaning too, so I apologise in advance for any offence I may cause with this post (I'm having a go at the tax office here).
I've just had my car registered in Ireland. I had an exempt status put on it so I could keep my UK plates just incase I had to move back to the UK.
Turns out the DVLA weren't too honest to me about my UK tax status once I insured it over in Ireland. So for a while there I was driving a car in limbo between the two countries. Couldn't tax it in Ireland as it had UK plates, couldn't tax it in the UK because it had Irish insurance (couldn't insure it in the UK for Irish roads either).
So long to short - I now have an Irish registered car. So I bought road tax.
( Here be ranting and confusion ) If I pay this tax bill for at least three years then I would have paid off the full cost of my car. I just- That just doesn't make sense. Especially when there isn't much of a public transport system here and the only option I have is to own a car.
I'm sorry - it appears that I didn't actually ask anything here, I just ranted a bit.

I'm over later this week for some time with the bf. Are ladies wearing coats yet, or is it still blazers and cardigans?
Thanks!
